    Harold Hill, a smooth-talking salesman with a knack for deception, arrives in River City, Iowa, with a scheme to exploit the town's naivete. He convinces them to invest in instruments and uniforms for a boys' band he promises to lead, despite his complete lack of musical knowledge. His plan to pocket the money and disappear is thrown off course when he unexpectedly falls for Marian, the librarian.
